about

In late 2006, while learning to use my Electribe EMX, I programmed a fiddle tune from a book as an exercise. The idea of traditional Celtic dance music blended with modern electronic dance music appealed to me, inspired by Charles de Lint's urban fantasy novels filled with fairy raves. For two years, I performed live as The Good Neighbors, doing traditional music. The first 8 tracks were the album I put out in 2007, a month after I started the project. All performed live in the studio using the EMX as the sole instrument. The later tracks from 2008 added an MC-909 to the mix, as well as some vocals, setting the stage for Ghost Estate.

So what went wrong? Well, I never really learned the ins and outs of dance music. I never really got involved in the scene, to understand what people liked and why they liked it. I was too wrapped up in what I wanted the music to be. I was trapped with the limitations of the EMX and my concept of as much live performance as possible. I was learning, as you can hear from the later tracks, but I needed a lot more work. And it was kinda weird; neither fans of techno nor Celtic music seemed to really get what I was trying to do.

Still, I think it's better than it had any right to be, and as a solo performance, there is some merit to the early recordings. I'm happy I did it, I learned a lot from the music, and it definitely paved the way to my later/current work. I hope some of you enjoy it, and feel free to share it!
